Peak Performance

Here’s how to improve your performance at any level, in athletics and other activities

One main thing that separates professional and amateur athletes and performers is their mental game. In Crossfit, MMA Training, Golf, Beach Volleyball and basically any other sport, the physical skills you learn to actually play are but a small part of how well you’ll perform at the gym, rink, field or court.

Luckily, human beings (that means YOU) already have all the resources to improve their mental game. Here’s how:

Focus your mind: This is what is commonly referred to as getting in the zone. Start by remembering a time or situation that you really loved, enjoyed, etc. Maybe a moment in time when you felt invincible and when you felt you were at your best… you’ve had those… and then choose an action such as squeezing your fist, and while you think about that time, squeeze your fist (or whatever you choose) and do that a few times.

With a few repetitions you’ll be able to create a conditioned response that gives you those feelings when you squeeze your fist in the same way when it’s time to get in the zone. Obviously it’s important you always match the single action to the same desired response.

Redirect your thoughts: Lingering disempowering thoughts send the wrong signals to your subconscious mind that failure is what you’re after. Ouch. Read that again…

You unconscious mind will manifest what you’re thinking. So when you catch yourself thinking things like: I can’t lift this thing, I can’t do one more rep, or I’m probably going to lose this one, or anything else that clouds your thinking, you can recognize the thoughts that don’t serve you and redirecting them by asking yourself questions like: What if that wan’t true? or I wonder if I can do 10 more…? or What if because he’s bigger than me it means I’m faster!?

These simple redirections will get your mind moving in the direction of possibility and get you feeling the right way to excel at what you’re doing.

Rehearse success: Your mind is amazingly powerful and the right type of focus is going to give you the best results. Think about what happens when you allow yourself to worry about something… it’s paralyzing, isn’t it? But have you ever worried about something and when it came time it never became an issue after all? It’s nice when that happens but it doesn’t change the suffering you put yourself through while worrying.

When thinking about your upcoming game, match, competition… imagine yourself going through the whole process of successfully, feeling empowered the entire time and performing your best. Rehearse success instead of failure and when you need it, the feeling of success will be what’s familiar and therefore it will come easier.

Take care of your mind and body: Your mind and body need nurturing and care. If you take good care of them by sleeping and eating well, they will take care of you and allow you to perform your best in any activity.

Fatigue can be physical and/or mental and when you’re on the court or gym it can cause negative feelings and so, negative results. Drink plenty of water and feed your body quality nutrients.

All this is great but…

Sometimes keeping yourself motivated and focused on your fitness goals can be challenging. That’s where I come in.

I can help you set yourself up for athletic performance success by creating those strong resources with you and teaching you how to get in the zone automatically. You can also learn how to increase your motivation and even improve your accuracy.

Sessions are available by phone, Skype, or in person if we happen to be in Lake Tahoe or San Diego at the same time. Of course phone or Skype make distance a non-factor and work like a charm.
